En-Route Visits Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage & Herbal Spice Garden

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage established in 1975 as place for shelter and cares the wounded elephants and abandoned baby elephants found in jungle. This is covered a area over 24 acre land. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was under the department of Department of Wildlife but now under the National Zoological Garden.

The main daily activities taken place in the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage are Feeding milk to baby elephants and the bathing sessions. Feeding to babies usual taken place around 8.00 am ( may subjected to change, please contact the relevant authorities before you visit). Elephants were taken for bath in nearby Ma-Oya ( a river) around 10.00 am and 2.30 pm in the evening. After the end of the session next ready to visit Spice garden (You will be offered free Ayurveda head massage)

In the 16th century Ceylon, as it was then known, was discovered by Portuguese who soon began trading in cinnamon and other spices. The Dutch and British followed bringing with them their own history and influences, forming a strong Western presence which created a history of food expressed with spices which can be tasted in the dishes today. Also the Spices are use in Ayurveda in Sri Lanka.
